With her father’s health in question, Sara Thomas is focused on reducing his anxiety. That’s no small feat considering his high-stress job, not to mention her own distractions. Everyone knows Sara’s single; no one knows she’s pregnant. There’s never a good time to unexpectedly get knocked up, but now is definitely not it. Regardless, she doesn’t want anyone to know—especially not her father—until she has a game plan in place. But when Jonny, one of her father’s players, seeks vigilante justice on the ice, everything gets tossed out the window.

Cam Johnson’s role as a fourth-line winger with the NHL’s Portland Storm entails more than scoring goals. He has to ensure other teams don’t take liberties with the Storm’s star players. The way Cam sees it, that’s the most important aspect of his job. His teammates call him Jonny; opposing fans call him a goon; the media calls him an enforcer. The title’s unimportant. Cam will always fight for his team—even if he has to break the rules. He’s used to taking penalties, but he never meant for anyone else to suffer from his choices.

When Cam’s actions cause Sara’s worst fears to be realized, he blames himself. He’s screwed everything up; now he has to set things right. Mutual attraction leads to lust, and suddenly Cam is taking penalties at every turn…at least where Sara is concerned. He’s got to think on his feet or he’ll end up with a Delay of Game.

I love Catherine Gayle. I adore Her. I’m even quoted on one of her books, Light the Lamp!! Her books don’t just grab your attention, they tug at your soul. (And it’s not very often that I can say that about any book.) I swear, this series gets better with each new book.

This time we have Sara, Coach Scotty’s daughter, who is stressed to the max with her dad’s health, her own “little problem” and her extreme stubbornness. Then, we have Jonny (Cam Johnson) who is the resident Goon for the Portland Storm, but while taking on Sara’s problems, he is also dealing with his own suspension from the NHL – during the Stanley Cup, none the less! Sara is stubborn, and spend most of the book pushing Cam away (no surprise here) but Cam? He could possibly be one of my favorite book boyfriends ever. He may rival Shea AdlerToni Aleo‘s Assassins series!)

But here’s what I really love about this series – the previous characters don’t just make cameos, they play huge roles in this story. They are friends and family, and this team really supports one another on all levels. ( Back in On The Fly they started talking about how the Portland Storm is a family, and it’s definitely the case!) But not only do these characters play a role, their stories continue. Babs plays a decent sized part in this book, and I’m excited to see what summer will bring for Babs and Katie in upcoming books!

Catherine Gayle is well-known for her historical romance, but if contemporary is more your thing (like me) then I cannot recommend her Portland Storm books enough! (But please, do yourself a HUGE favor, and start with book 1, Breakaway!)
