In Living on the Edge, Childers explains how the same love of action and adrenaline that made him a local legend as a drug dealer and biker, was redirected by God to hunting the Lord's Resistance Army and rescuing children, some as young as five, from terrifying lives as killers and sex slaves. Living on the Edge was written in collaboration with John Perry. Perry is the author of 31 books including Lady of Arlington, nominated for the Lincoln Prize for books on the Civil War era and coauthor of the New York Times bestselling novel, Letters to God.
About six months ago my husband came home and told me we HAD to watch this awesome movie – Machine Gun Preacher. I absolutely loved the movie and immediately rushed to read as much about Sam Childers as I could! (Including the fantastic book, Another Man’s War: The True Story of One Man’s Battle to Save Children in the Sudan!)
Sam Childers is an amazing man, with a pretty fantastic story! He was involved in a life of drugs and guns before being saved, and then making his life’s mission to save the children in the Sudan. (I really strongly recommend his first book – Another Man’s War, if you’re wanting to learn his story!)
That said? I was somewhat disappointed by Living on the Edge! It was great in a lot of ways, it gave more information on Sam’s work in the Sudan, on what life is like there. But at times it seemed like it was more of an angry rant – which I felt was justified, but also made me feel a bit uncomfortable, like I was stuck in the middle of someone elses argument!
Either way? Sam Childers is an amazing man with a wonderful story to tell!
